FCAC describes payday loans as an expensive way to borrow and encourages consumers to consider alternatives. The best alternative depends on why the money is needed, how quickly it is needed and whether the borrower can repay without creating another shortfall.
Options worth comparing
- Existing savings: using emergency savings has an opportunity cost but no loan interest.
- Bank or credit-union credit: a small personal loan, line of credit or overdraft may cost less for eligible borrowers.
- Credit-card cash advance: still expensive, but FCAC comparisons show it can be less costly than payday borrowing in some situations.
- Creditor payment arrangement: a utility, landlord or service provider may offer a due-date change or payment plan.
- Family or community support: where appropriate, formalize repayment expectations to avoid misunderstandings.
- Benefits and assistance: government or community programs may address the underlying expense without new debt.
Compare dollars, not approval speed
For every option, write down cash received, mandatory fees, interest, total repayment, payment dates and consequences of missing a payment. A slower product can be substantially cheaper; a low advertised payment can be expensive if the term is long.
When borrowing does not solve the problem
If repayment itself will create the next cash shortage, another short-term loan may only move the problem forward. Consider a budget adjustment, creditor negotiation or reputable debt/credit counselling before adding recurring high-cost debt.
